As a nurse and midwife, I see the difference that knowledge can bring in achieving positive outcomes. It’s essential that you understand the options for care available to you, and that you are empowered to make the best decision for you. It can be an overwhelming experience when you find out you are pregnant (whether it is the first time or the eighth), and there is a lot of information available that may not reassure you. I feel we have become overexposed to an unrealistic narrative around labour and birth, just look at those 20 min screaming and puffing women in the movies, and this has caused an erosion of true understanding of birthing and mothering. Labour is a transformative experience, where women move from pregnancy to parenthood, but many women are fearful about birth. Hypnobirthing gives women and their birth partners the tools and knowledge to release the fear and feel empowered to make birth decisions that are right for them.
Hypnobirthing teaches women and their birth partners, the skills to use self-hypnosis to face their birth calmly and in control. It will assist them to achieve a deep state of relaxation that will optimise their natural hormones and allow their body to do the work of birth while their mind remains calm and focussed. A calm, positive birth experience with a supportive and involved partner is the goal of hypnobirthing. Hypnosis has been shown to be an effective method for pain relief, allowing the mind to manage the physical pain their body is experiencing. The techniques used in hypnobirthing can reduce the need for analgesia in labour and lead to fewer augmentations of labour (where clinicians use synthetic hormones to assist labour which often slows in response to pain relief). We understand that you may want pain relief as part of your birth plan and that is ok, you can still use the skills you will learn to facilitate labour alongside your chosen analgesia. Hypnobirthing will give you the skills and understanding of labour so that you can be the master of your birth.
